Hey friends!

It is never too early to prepare for the upcoming school year! As a mom and an educator, I’m always looking for ways to improve in both areas. Planning ahead is a so important when it comes to the chaos that a new school year can bring. I think that it is important to learn from my mistakes and to revise my system while the information is still fresh on my mind. We are currently in the sweet position where we are in the middle of the previous school year ending and the new school year beginning! Prep work now in small increments will make the task of getting ready for the upcoming school year that much easier to deal with.

1) First, make a plan for meals. I love to eat! My child loves to eat! I know that the first thing we have to do is eat each morning. My daughter starts planning her breakfast menu the night before. 🙂 I suggest that you make a plan for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. A backup plan is useful for days when unexpected events happen and your schedule is thrown off! Something quick that you can cook or pick up on the way home will come in handy for days like this!

2) Get your school supplies early! Shopping for school supplies at the last minute brings on unnecessary stress before the  school year begins. Shopping early allows you to catch the sales and you have a better opportunity to purchase the items while they are in stock. If you don’t have your child’s school supply list, check the school’s website or stop by the school to pick one up during office hours. Also, attend School Supply Drives! Community organizations all over sponsor school supply drives each year. These free events give away many of the items that are on your child’s school supply list.

3) Make salon/barbershop appointments early! Guess what, everyone is trying to be first day of school fresh! Again, waiting until the last minute will cause unnecessary stress. Also, try to pick out the hairstyles or haircuts before your appointment begins so that you can communicate this to your child’s stylist. You don’t want to cause him/her additional stress during this super busy time.

4) Shop for clothes and shoes as early as possible! Our state has a tax free weekend where we get to save money on school supplies, clothes, etc. which is helpful this time of year! Personally, I can do without the crowds, so I choose to do my tax free weekend shopping online. Figure out what system works for your family! Make your list ahead of time so that you can enjoy the sales and tax free weekend where applicable.

5) Have a dedicated learning space at home. Think about where your child(ren) can go everyday to complete homework, study, and enjoy a good book! Having a consistent space in your home makes it easy to have a routine that you can stick with for child to complete his/her work.

Basically, start planning early! It is ok to revise your plan if it doesn’t seem to be working out how you planned it. I hope that you have a great school year!!!
