Hey Friends!
First, let me start by thanking you for all of your support during #primeday2023! I’ll keep sharing deals that I find here and on my social media platforms.
Now, let’s chat about something I recently came across in the news. A fellow mom was concerned about her daughter exiting Kindergarten before learning to read. My educator and mom senses started tingling, so I’m here to help!

Library Resources
Here are the at home activities that I use with my daughter to support her learning. First, I spoke with my public library staff about the materials that are offered. As a mom, anything that is FREE is speaking to me! I was informed that the BOB book series is a great resource for building at home literacy skills. Each book set has a different focus that caters to your child’s learning. The only issue that I have ever run into with checking out the series has been availability because it is so popular for early readers! So, after seeing my daughter’s progress and interest in the BOB books series, I ordered her a set from Books-A-Million so that way we may continue developing her confidence and literacy skills. Also, I would definitely recommend speaking with your child’s teacher to determine the best starting point for at home support.

Free TV Resources
PBS Kids is another FREE resource that I use with my daughter to support her literacy development during at home learning. There are so many different shows on the app that allow opportunities for learning. My favorites are Super Why, Word World, and Martha Speaks. There are other shows that I love that I’ll talk about in a different post. These three shows are entertaining and show various words on screen throughout the show. Children get the opportunity to build the words that they are learning throughout the course of the show.

Libby and Hoopla
Did you know that public libraries have free audiobooks for you to check out? One of my favorite co-workers put me on, so I’m putting you on! I check out audiobooks and use the Libby and Hoopla apps to listen to them. This is something that we do while riding in our vehicle on the way to school, the store, and even long road trips! At first, I wasn’t exactly sure how my daughter was reacting to the audiobooks or even if she was listening. However, if I paused the book mid-sentence for whatever reason, she was able to predict the next word in the book. I knew at that point that she was hooked and audiobooks were a win!
Hooked-on-Phonics
The next step in at home support for us has been the Hooked-on-Phonics series! I like that the videos are simplistic for younger children with lots of opportunities to practice. This program gives us multiple opportunities to work on the phonetic sounds before reading them in books. It is an investment, but the end results are so worth it!
I hope that you can use this list to find ways to support your young children with literacy at home! Everyday will not be easy, so I suggest that you set goals with your child so that you all can celebrate each milestone. Whatever you do to celebrate, make it fun!
Come back to tell me which resources help your family!
See you soon- MQ
